In response to several cases our office investigated involving the deaths of detainees in Myanmar prisons, we identified a pattern of torture and incommunicado detention being carried out by the Tatmadaw (Myanmar military) against men and boys in Rakhine State suspected of belonging to an ethnic armed organization called the Arakan Army. We channeled the pattern of these abuses to UN Independent Human Rights experts Yanghee Lee, Agnes Callamard, and Nils Melzer, who published a press release expressing concern about the allegations of torture and ill-treatment, use of incommunicado detention, and string of deaths in custody.
